Life without Scripture remains the reality for more than 3,000 language communities today. Millions still cannot access God’s Word in the language they know best.

Without a clear understanding of Scripture, how can a community know who God is and what He says? Bibleless believers often report feeling unable to turn to God’s Word with confidence. Meanwhile, unbelievers in these communities have no opportunity to encounter Him through Scripture at all.

Bible translation changes this reality.

When Scripture becomes available in a local language, the light of truth dawns in hearts and minds, and churches grow. Shared access to God’s Word in a community’s mother tongue creates space for unity among believers. This unity reflects the prayer of Jesus for His Church. Indigenous-led Bible translation ignites a journey in which believers grow together as one.

“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.  I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one—I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.” – John 17:20-23, NIV

The Church at the Center

Church-centered Bible translation begins with local believers. Church elders identify potential translators and project leaders while supporting the translation process. This approach places responsibility within the local church rather than outside structures.

As church members take part, relationships begin to form. Different denominations and language communities work together around a shared purpose. Bible translation creates space for collaboration that would not normally take place, laying a foundation for unity.

Community Change Begins As Unity Takes Shape

In Eastern Krahn, Liberia, churches that were once divided began working together. Local leaders formed a committee composed of members from different denominations, creating space for shared decision-making and fostering trust.

One local report explains, The churches in the community were not united before, but since we started this project, members from different churches work together to foster unity among themselves.”

As the work continued, church members held joint fellowships across denominations for the first time. The change reached beyond church structures into daily life. One team member shared that the Bible translation process revealed how “God is in the business of bringing peace in the family” through His Word.

Built by the Church

Local churches do not stand on the sidelines of Bible translation. Church leaders take responsibility for key decisions throughout the process, placing the work within the church rather than in outside organizations. As a result, Bible translation strengthens the church’s capacity to lead, teach, and serve.

Churches do not simply receive Scripture. The broader Christian community takes part in the translation process, and that shared responsibility strengthens both mission and confidence.

One God, One Church, One Purpose

Bible translation creates opportunities for churches to work side by side in ways they normally would not. Review committees include representatives from across the local denominations, ensuring that many voices are heard and respected.

As one Ethiopian Bible translator shared, “All translators are selected from different denominations. This opened the door to worship together and expand the Kingdom in unity.”

As Christians share responsibility, relationships deepen. Differences become less significant as a shared commitment to God’s Word takes priority. Churches gather around the same Scripture and work toward the same goal.

Living in God’s Word

When local churches take part in Bible translation, Scripture does not remain distant or unfamiliar. Community members begin to read, hear, and discuss God’s Word with growing understanding. Church gatherings and daily life begin to reflect that shared understanding.

A family gathers around a meal and turns to Scripture together. Friends send verses in messages of encouragement. After years of prayer and longing, God’s Word is no longer something received from the outside, but something deeply their own.

These joyful believers turn to Scripture with enthusiasm and recognize God’s voice in words they now clearly understand.

God’s Work Reaches the Heart

In the Mandingo Konyanka community in Liberia, Bible translation has fostered personal relationships. .

One Bible translator explains, “initially, there was no togetherness,” but through the Bible translation process, team members began to understand the importance of working together. This holy work reached beyond the translation team. Families experienced renewed love, and relationships began to heal as people responded to the teaching of Scripture. At the same time, many young people showed interest in the gospel, even in the face of pressure from surrounding religious traditions.

Strengthening the Church for the Future

Equipping local church communities for mother tongue Bible translation leads to sustainable, long-term growth and mutual respect.

The Word for the World works alongside local churches by providing training and support for Bible translation. Local believers are equipped as translators and grow in skill over time, taking on increasing responsibility within the work. As translation progresses, local leaders develop teaching skills, linguistic competencies, and deep biblical understanding.

This approach builds a strong foundation within the church. Over time, churches take responsibility for every part of the translation process, creating a sustainable, locally led movement that continues forward.

This gospel growth carries the potential to multiply indigenous Bible translation efforts exponentially. As translation teams complete their work, they are equipped to support neighboring language communities who also desire Scripture in their own language.

God’s Work Continues Until All Have Heard

Access to the Bible transforms how communities respond to God and love one another. Unity flourishes through the power of the Holy Spirit. Relationships take root in Truth that people understand. As believers grow in God’s Word, churches mature in their shared purpose in Christ.

This is the answer to Jesus’ prayer for His Church.

When believers around the world pray and give so that Scripture reaches every language, they take part in that answer. Invest in this important mission today.
