Our History

In 1979, Dr Véroni Krüger heard God say, “I want you to … establish an indigenous Bible translation agency whose vision will be empowering nationals to translate the Bible for their own people.” Initial responses to a decentralized translation approach were skeptical. But on January 9th, 1981, PJ Vivier and Dr. Krüger signed the Articles of Association and The Word for the World became a reality. Dr. Krüger then recruited a team of driven missionaries to blaze innovative trails in Bible translation.

Today, under Kobus van Aswegen's leadership, The Word for the World invests in communities by equipping church and local Christian leaders with necessary tools and establishing translation processes and infrastructures. Initial skeptics now recognize The Word for the World as one of the most innovative organizations in the field of Bible translation.

 Vision & Mission

The vision of The Word for the World is the glory of God through transformed lives by the power of His Word in everyone’s heart language.

 Our Vision 2050:

The Word for the World envisions being instrumental in completing first-time translations of the entire Bible in 1,000 languages by 2050.

The mission of The Word for the World Bible Translators is to enable persons, ministries, and organizations from language communities that do not have the Bible in their own language yet to take responsibility for Bible translation and related activities and to ensure its availability and accessibility.

 Core Values

The following core values guide everything we do as individuals and as an organization.

The Entire Word Of God

We believe God desires to speak to people through the entire Bible. Therefore, our goal is to complete a full-Bible translation in each language we serve.

Passionate About First-time Bible Translations

We believe God wants all people to know and serve Him. We prioritize first-time Bible translations where Scripture is most needed, especially among people who do not have any portion of the Bible in their language.

Respect For All Cultures

We believe each people group is a blessing from God and has the right to hear Him speak in their own language. We approach all cultures with an open mind and do not discriminate by language population size or socio-political status.

Servanthood

We work as servants of servants, prioritizing others before ourselves; partnering openly with organizations, churches, individuals, and ministries; and placing ownership of Bible translation with indigenous believers and the local church.

Exellence In Serving The Lord

We exist to bring glory to God and to please Him. We hold to biblical values and conduct ourselves with integrity, fairness, honor, and respect; seek innovation in our methods; and carefully steward the gifts and resources entrusted to us.

Flexibility

We continually seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit, place prayer at the center of our strategy, strive to finish well in every Bible translation project, and adapt readily as we pursue our vision, mission, and goals.
